Blog No More....(for a while anyway.)

Hello Blog world, I haven't been here in a while. Tween work (job #1), photography (job #2), and family....I have had NO spare time. I actually got to spend 10 min playing my guitar last night. Wow, that was a treat.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, (well, kinda...well, it's more like whining... (-:). No really, on a serious note, to be this busy with jobs, in this economy is a blessing! I've been shooting brides, seniors, dancers, and families every weekend and sometimes a couple times during the week, since Feb 27th.....and this will continue till the end of June. :-) The thing is, I still enjoy it.

Well....

I've been posting some images on Face Book from each shoot. So, I'm going to quit posting them on the blog for now. Sniff Sniff.....I'm going to miss you blog site.... But, I'll be back. Maybe when I get a little more free time.

Hello Everyone! I just wanted to share this with yall. I photographed a wedding in Jan in Church Pointe for a wonderful couple, Claire and Greg. I was privileged to get to meet some of their family members. Well, Claire's sister has a blog. She recently contacted me to get permission to use some of my photos on her blog. Then she asked if she could write a blog post about me! I was like, ME?? Why?? I went to her blog site and started reading. I've never seen the likes of it.

Her blog was corny, cheesy, silly, crazy, etc....

I LOVED it!!

Oh, how the corn floweth! I wish I could pull corn off of the stalk like this gal. I am in cheesy awe! (not to be mistaken by Cheesy Grits!)

Rachelle and Gene's Engagement Photos

Rachelle and Gene. These guys have been together for a long time. What a cool couple! We had a great time shooting downtown. The weather was great! (for a change) It was great to see the sun come out and warm our skin. We watched the youngsters hang out by the 9/11 memorial and street dance. Gene really wanted to join them but he was too tired. Anyway, here are a couple shots from their shoot.

Once again, special thanks to Tim. The guy can hold a light like no other! Technical note: We tried out my new Lastolite EZ Hotshoe Softbox (24"x24"). Used it eTTL with an infrared transmitter. I'm in love. It produces a nice even soft light. So portable, so nice, so in love.

Ashley and Brian

Ashley and Brian got married last year. I had a great time shooting these guys, they were a ton of fun. Last week, Ashley and I were discussing her wedding album design, and she told me that Brian was leaving to go overseas soon. He is in the Army. So, I asked her if they wanted to do a shoot before he left. We met for a quick session at the park. I was honored to do it. Brian is going to be leaving for over a year. These guys are making a huge sacrifice for our country. Without service men like Brian, we'd all be in trouble. Here are a few shots of them. Amanda and Ian's Wedding

Well, Amanda and Ian got married last weekend. The streets were crowded with barricades getting ready for the Mardi Gras Parades the next day. But, everyone made it on time and it went oh-so-smooth.

Amanda's Bridal Shoot

We shot Amanda's Bridals at Jungle Gardens on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. It is so hard to get Amanda to smile! Yea right! It was all I could do to get a "serious" look from her. What a fun time. Her mom, dad, mother in law, aunt, and others came along. What a crew! My face was hurting from laughing! I almost had to put Mrs Alice in time out...she kept making funny faces at Amanda. Oh!, this dress is hand made! Aunt Alice and Mom (and I'm sure others helped) made this beauty from scratch. WOW! It was stunning.

Krystal and Mark's Engagement Photos

For Krystal and Mark's E-Session, we decided to go wild and head to the Zoo. These guys love going to the Zoo. I love to shoot people in places that they love to go! It was a great day and just the perfect temp. The animals were out in full force and running all around. We had a great time "monkeying around".

Claire's Bridal Shoot

Claire's bridal shoot must have been rescheduled 3 times. Every time we had a date scheduled, the rain would show up! We finally got a day to shoot in December. We headed to Grand Coteau, the clouds were coming down. The sun was no where to be found. But...it was not raining!

This tree had just dumped it's leaves. Ohh Wow! It looked like snow. Wait...that would make it yellow snow...never mind. It was really pretty.

The bench in the background is where her husband proposed to her.

Chad and Sue's Engagement Photos

It rained all morning...nasty...icky...wet. Our shoot was scheduled for 3pm. About 1pm, it quit raining! Shoot is on! We met at the park. They had a new addition to the family...Chad's Honda 1800 VTX crusier. That's a machine!! Well we HAD to photograph the new addition. So, I hopped into the back of the truck while Tim drove. Chad and Sue hopped on the bike and we rode around. It was sooooo tough to get any shots, our roads are bumpier than the moon! I've never shot from the back of a moving truck...I guess there's a first time for everything! Well, the weather held off and we made the light great. It was nice to see two people so in love! Chelsea is graduating in 2010. I met with her, her mom, and a friend downtown on Saturday to do some shooting. She play's tennis, so we stopped off at the courts. I was going to play a few games, but, I didn't want to beat her. (Really, I didn't want to get beat by a girl!!) So, we just shot some photos instead. Mrs Allie called me up on Sunday morning. She was worried about the weather. It was overcast outside with no sun shining. She thought we may have to reschedule....reschedule?.....on an overcast day? NO Way!! I explained to her that an overcast day is like God's Softbox. (See HERE for example of a regular softbox) I LOVE to shoot on a day like this. Anyway, these guys were great! Hams-R-Us. Danielle and William got married!! I traveled down to Jeanerette and New Iberia this weekend to photograph Danielle and William's wedding. It was a beautiful wedding! I met Claire and Greg at her mom's antique shop on Sunday afternoon. Cha Ching, another beautiful afternoon!! We started shooting around the shop. (They really have a pretty location.) Then we moved across the street to the Seminary. This another pretty location to shoot at. I'm thinking that I'll be back here one day.... Anyway, Greg and Claire were ready to go. They were working the camera like some supermodels. Greg was as GQ as a model straight out of a Sears catalog. :-) LOL.... They did great. Here are a few from their day.

Emmy's Photo Session

I had the opportunity to spend an hour with Mrs Emmy and her mom this week. We went out to Vermillion Ville and explored the area. This little youngen can MOVE! Cute as a button, but active. Actually, "active" is an understatement :-). She flat out wore me out. But, it was a blast!!

We played Peek-a-Boo. It was fun. Ya know,it was like we were at the same mental level. (alright...maybe she is above me...but who's countin)

She would strike a pose for like 1/500th of a second. Then move. It reminded me of trying to photograph a hummingbird. :-)

Beth's Bridals

We shot Beth at Magnolia Ridge Plantation located in Washington, LA. It was the first time shooting there, so we took our time and explored. The location is beautiful! It was cloudy, so it wasn't scorching hot. Beth was a little nervous at first, but she quickly warmed up to the idea of being a celebrity model in a short time, and she began to work it like a diva for the camera. :-)

Heather and Jonathan's Wedding

Heather and Jonathan got married on a wonderful Friday night. The ceremony and reception were held at Joey's on Bertrand. It was a great location. They had a small wedding, it was very cozy/friendly/welcome. It was an honor and pleasure to work with these guys. I did a Bridal Reveal with them. She wanted to do all of her formal photos before the ceremony.

Ohh, what a cake!

The grooms cake was a New York Cheesecake. They put a piece off to the side for me.....I ate it when I got home....My goodness......That was soooooo good. Thanks Joey and staff!!

Jonathan's mom found a Polaroid camera. I didn't know you could still find film for those!

Well, who needs a band when the bride, groom, and the wedding party can play! DJ, who needs em. Heather and Jonathan played the song that the bridal party danced to.

Heather's Bridal Shoot

Day of Bridal Shoot.....4:45pm.....driving to Jungle Gardens......very cloudy......rain on the horizon.......cell phone rings.......Heather calls me up with a cheery, happy voice, "It's pouring down rain, what are we going to do". I was expecting a sad dissapointed voice, not Heather! She was just as happy as can be. We waited around the gift shop for a little while hoping it would clear up.....and it did! It was absolutely beautiful. The rain had cooled down the temps a bit. So, off we went to shoot Heather.

As usual, out at Jungle Gardens, we always have our large lizzard friends! They are such cuties....

It's not often I get to shoot in front of this tree. But, the cloud cover was just perfect so we were able to get it.

Here's a photo showing Logan. He's my professional lighting assistant and my oldest son. He helps out on Bridal Shoots. (By the way, he does accept tips....for any future brides that may read this....LOL) He's my pack mule and wireless remote control for the lights. It's really awesome to be able to work with him. He's becoming quite the young man, and he's a huge help.

Kendra and Daniel's Wedding

Kendra and Daniel got married last weekend at First Baptist Church here in Lafayette. It was a beautiful day. We had a "Cold Front" move through the day before....(it was in the upper 80's :-) ) For the month of August, it actually was nice. The Church was HUGE and easy to get lost in. (Not for me though...I have the senses of a Beagle.) Anyway, here's some of their story.

Kendra wanted to do her formal photos before the ceremony. So, I did something called the "Bridal Reveal". It was the first time Daniel saw his bride in her dress. The moments were special.

On a hot hot day, back in June 09, we went out to Jungle Gardens on Avery Island and shot a bridal session. It was a hot day, so we worked quickly, but the results were great. Lacey and Brandon got married last weekend. It started out as a HOT, but beautiful day. Did I mention that it was HOT!! No suit and tie for me that day. It was dress casual all the way. The wedding went off without a hitch. (lol...hitch..get it, wedding humor......OK, that was corny...) Anyway, here are a few photos from their day.

Dwight's Home!!

I had the honor of attending a Home Coming last week. A very near and dear familiy had a son come home from Iraq. Dwight is a special kind of man. This guy is good to the core. His Mama-N-Dem did a good job raising him. (The rest of his familily aint half bad either!...lol!)

Dwight joined the Marines and got married last year. Two weeks after getting married, he was deployed to Iraq. He spent around 6 months there and now he's back. Here are a few shots of his arrival....

The bus was pulling up....Leslie was just a "little" anxious for hubby to get home.

When the doors opened, it was hard to hold back.

The emotion was high...to say the least.

Dwight got to hold his new baby for the first time.....JUST Kidding! That was someone else's kid!! LOL!

Arizona, what a dry place...

Whew! It's been a long time since I last posted anything. I have been really busy. Shooting, editing, working, fishing, etc.... I shot a couple of bridal sessions here lately, but, I can't post any of them until after the weddings.

I recently went to Arizona for a week. I was installing some new equipment on our EMS / AirEvac base radios in the field. Here are a few pictures from the trip. I put over 1200 miles on the rental car in a week. I was in the saddle a bunch!

This was a first for me. I installed a radio in a Burger King! Actually, the BK is at the bottom of a mountain. They just rent a space from em to put the repeater. The actual radio is up on top of the mountain. It works great, and you can get coffee and food too!

There was still snow up on this mountain. It was really nice up there, except for the fact that I couldn't breathe!! 8,000 foot elevation is not normal for me! (Elevation in Lafayette is 42 feet.)

I sure wish we had tower sites like this here!!

Motions Dance Studio Pictures

Wow! What a week! I traveled to Motions Dance Studio in Cottonport LA for 3 evenings of shooting dancers. It was a fun week (and tiring!). When I got there, I didn't know Fondeau from Tendu and a Tutu from a Petiskirt. By the third day, I was actually helping pose the students! I even tried out my dance moves...it wasn't very sucessful. I'll stick to photography. :-) Anyway, here are a couple of them to share. This is my first time embedding a slideshow into the blog, so let me know how ya like it.
Tricia, thanks for allowing me to photograph your students, it was such a pleasure!....who am I kiddin...that was a BUNCH of work!! Filming some Mantooth Downtown

Saturday night. Downtown Lafayette. Video camera. Home made video dolly. Camera's. Lights. Strange people. It was pretty cool.....The boys and I went downtown to watch Paul and the gang shoot a scene for his move Cutter Mantooth PI. The scene involved Cutter walking down the street talking to people. We met some pretty different individuals along the way. The boys got a real kick out of the lady talking to the post....

Race For The Cure 2009

Race for the Cure 2009. Downtown Lafayette -3/21/09 - Around 9000 people showed up - with one goal.....to support breasts. (kinda like a bra...) Ok, sorry for the cheesyness, but, you are reading my blog. Go figure. Anyway, they were rasing money to support breast cancer research. There were more people downtown that day than I have ever seen. I shot some pictures of the events.

Tiffany's Bridals 3/21/09

Well Saturday rolled around and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. The temp was perfect! What a beautiful day to shoot a bridal session. I had Brannon with me as my P.R.O. (Portable Reflector Operator) We showed up at Tiffany's uncle's house for the first half of the shoot. She had her 4 yr old son with her. What a cute little feller! He was dressed up like a GQ model with his tie and slacks. What a handfull!! There is no mistaking that he is ALL boy Like Tiffany, her boy is much more comfortable in blue jeans, t-shirt, and barefooted than being all dressed up. Here's some shots out in back by their barn:

After the barn, in true Lousiana fasion, she broke out the guns.......

Now here's the sad part, see Tiffany's aunt passed away out here a while back. So, she wanted to do a special photo of her remembering her aunt. There is a plaque hanging on the tree for her aunt.
Then we moved on to the UL Alumni Center. The light just kept on getting better.
We had a great time. I hope Tiffany and her family had as much fun as I did on this shoot. Thanks...Chris

Free Photo Tips Friday....I mean Monday 3-23-09

Hello to All! Photo Tips Friday didn't happen. I was super busy this weekend meeting new clients, shooting a bridal session, talking about breasts and more! Wait, hold on a minute, did I just say what you thought I said....yes. We attended the Race for the Cure event here in downtown Lafayette. They raise money for breast cancer research. They had around 9000 runners!! I'll post some pictures later on this week.

Anyway, this weeks photo tips topics were generated by a reader's questions. I'll take some of his questions and try to answer them. They are mostly focused (pun intended...lol) (yes, that was pure corn.) on new photographers getting into photography on the cheap. So here goes!

Topic #1: Taking good pictures on a budget.

Well, here's a few questions that need to be answered: define "good", how large is this "budget" you are speaking of, and what is the purpose of the photos? Oh, one more question, are most of the photo's going to be taken inside or outside?

If the purpose of the pictures is just to have something to share with family, keep on the computer, maybe print out some 5x7's, etc.... than most point and shoot camera's will do a great job. If you want magizine quality photos, start shelling out the $$$. I like Canon, so, my point and shoot is a G10, it was around $400.00. It takes really good pictures for a little point and shoot camera. For a little less you can get a Canon SX110. Both of these are "good" camera's. If your budget is more like $2000.00. You can get a Canon 50D with an 18-200IS lens. Or if you have $5000.00 you can get the Big Daddy Especiale Canon 5d MkII with a 70-200L f2.8IS. But, that's getting off track. Here's the bottom line, to get professional quality pictures it cost's big bucks. It's not to say that you can't get lucky! One of my all time favorite photo's, that I have captured, happend with a little Canon 20d and a cheap Tamron lens (the whole rig was over $1200.00 almost 4 years ago, that same rig now cost around $400.00 used). It was the product of good timing. The sunset was beautiful and the light was amazing! I had this printed as a 24x30 and it looks amazing. It hangs on the wall of my bathroom today.

But, to consistantly get GREAT shots under any circumstances, it takes a great camera. Shop on ebay, buy used if you have to. An old 20d or 30d will still get some great shots under controlled lighting and with a good lens.

Here's a way to get better photo's with what ever camera you happen to have handy. Learn how to use it. Read the manual. Learn what Apperature and ISO and Shutter Speed do for you. If you leave the camera on the Green "Auto" setting, you are going to get photos that reflect that. Some of the time, Auto will get you a good picture. But, camera's can be fooled easily. So you have to know how to override the camera's settings to get the shot that you want.

Free Photo Tip Friday 3-13-09

Hello again, welcome to BrewyetPhoto's.....(say with a loud booming Monster Truck Announcer voice!!) FREE PHOTO TIPS FRIDAY..FRIDAY...FRIDAY..!!!!!!! It's the photography tips blog where you always get what you paid for!

Today I'll be talking about Off Camera Flash.

OK, enough of this selfish hype and useless banter. Lets get to talking about camera gear and stuff. Here I goes! Photography is ALL ABOUT LIGHT! Yes, I'm hollering. If you don't control light, your pictures will just be snapshots. On-camera flash has it's purpose. I use it often. (I'm not talking about the little pop up flash that's built into the camera.) When walking around shooting, by all means, use on camera flash. Get a good flash that mounts into the hot shoe of your camera. It will improve your photos by light years. (a little flash pun....) But, today, I want to talk more about taking the flash off of the camera to add more of a dimensional quality to your photos. There are SO many ways to do this, but I'm going to keep it simple and use Plain Old English, heretofore known as POE. For more in-depth info on this subject, pack a lunch and a blanket, and spend days reading The Strobist 101. This guy is the Yoda of Off Camera Flash.

Off camera lighting used to scare the daylights (pun intended..hehe) out of me. I thought it was some kind of weird voodoo that only master photographers could do. Well I was wrong. Because if Tom could do it, I knew it wasn't just a Master Photographer thing. (LOL Tom, just a joke!! Tom is a Yoda of many photography things as well.) Anyway, all it takes to do off camera flash is: (1) a flash,(2) a flash modifier, (3) a way to trigger the flash, (4)a flash holder and (5) a light stand.

(1)Flash: The flash can be anything from a cheap Vivitar 285HV to a more expensive Canon 580EXII. Or, anything in between. Important things to note when looking for a flash to use are, how does the flash trigger? Does it have a PC terminal, Hot shoe only, or an optical slave trigger? I prefer using the PC terminal method....because that's what my flashes have.

(2) Flash Modifiers: Basically, a flash modifier is something that "modifies" the light coming from your flash.....duhh. Straight on flash is harsh and directional. It causes harsh shadows and red eye and ugly shiny spots on people's faces. Modifiers soften the light so that it is more pleasing. They also diffuse the light to spread it around more so that shadows are softened and less noticeable. There are more diffusers on the market than Carter has Liver pills! (Whatever the heck that means....) The biggest portable modifier is the umbrella. There are different kinds and sizes of umbrellas. I use 42 incher that can be used as a shoot through or bounce. If you don't want to mount an umbrella on top of your camera, there are other options. See below for more examples of flash modifiers.

(3) Triggers: This is how you make the flash fire. You can use a cord that goes from your camera to the flash. (Not recommended due to trips on cords, tangled mess, can only use one flash, etc....) The best way is to use a wireless remote trigger. This consists of a transmitter that fits on your camera and a receiver that hooks up to the flash. There are MANY styles of remote triggers. The most expensive ones are made by PocketWizzard these are the cat's meow, but, they'll make your wallet skinny. The cheapest ones are made by Cactus. (These are labeled, "PovertyWizzards") I use some that are in between. They are made by Alien Bees. They are professional quality and won't break the bank. Sure, pocketwizzards can trigger your flash from 1600 feet away, but, I'm usually a little closer that that to my flash! :-)

(4)Flash Holder: There are many kinds! Look HERE for a page to B&H Photo. I would spend more or less money depending on how much you plan on using them.

(5)Light Stand: Again, depending on how much you use em, the price range is wide. HERE are the ones that I use. HERE is an El-cheapo version.

The Alien Bee receiver. This is the side that plugs into the flash unit.

Here is the transmitter.

I typically use the umbrella setup when shooting group shots at weddings and such. They provide a wide and even lighting. I can light up a big group with just two of these setups, and I don't have to drag out my big studio lights.

Snapshots of a typical off-camera setup:

Flash Modifiers: These modifiers are mainly used while the flash is mounted to the camera and you are walking around with it. But, you can also use them for off camera use. Like when the wind is blowing too hard to use an umbrella or when you are just shooting one person.

The Lightsphere: GREAT modifier! I use this one when I have low ceilings to bounce off of. It provides beautiful soft light. But, it's really bulky in the camera bag. (People always ask me at weddings, "Ma, wat dat ting is on dat flash der?")

The Omnibounce: One word for ya, Cheap. But, it works good for certain things. I use this one mainly when shooting outdoors with my 70-200 lens. With this diffuser on, I can point the flash directly at the subject to provide some fill light.
Demb Flip-It: I use the jumbo model. This is a GREAT diffuser for use when there is no ceiling (outdoors) or when the ceiling is really high. That big ole white thing tilts so you can force more or less light onto your subject.
Here are some examples photos using off camera flash. These types of photos are impossible to get with just a flash on the camera. The light would be too directional and harsh.

Just remember that I have only scratched the surface of this subject with this post. We could break down this subject into a year's worth of blog posts. But, hopefully I took the voodoo out of this subject just a little. So, go out and buy some gear and give it a try! Your pictures will only get better for it. Free Photo Tip Friday

Hello Everyone. Welcome to Free Photo Tips Friday. I am going to try and give some basic photography advice from time to time. I'll try to explain it in plain ole English and keep it simple. Just basic little things that can really improve your snapshots. I am no Strobist, this I know. But, some people aren't interested in using multi-light off camera strobes. They just have a little point and shoot, and want to take pictures.

Today's topic is: Keep it SIMPLE. Ask yourself these quick questions before you press the shutter: What is the "subject" of the photo? What is the purpose of the picture? Is there a bunch of clutter in the background? Am I at eye level of the subject, and if not, why? Will the picture be more pleasing if I just take a step forward or backwards, a little to the right or left, etc...

Example #1 (this is a snapshot to illustrate my point)

So, what is the "subject" of this photo?? Who knows?? There is so much junk in the shot you can't tell. Pretend for a moment that the little fan in the picture was a childs head. This is a typical snapshot.

Example #2

This is the same fan...I mean "Child's Head" as in the first photo. All I did was move around a bit, look at my background, and get down to the same level as the subject. I didn't move the fan at all. These were taken with my little point and shoot camera.

Here are a couple more examples of "killing the background" and defining the subject.

I hope this helps someone out and makes you think a little more before pressing the shutter next time. Sometimes little tips make a big difference in photos. Cutter Mantooth P.I. The Movie.

This movie is looking like it coming along quickly! The main character, Cutter Mantooth, is played by my brother Paul Brouillette. He plays a Private investigator on a mission. Paul and the gang have been shooting scenes for this movie for over a year. The filiming has been put into overdrive by the addition of Brannon Mcleod to the team. Brannon has accompanied me to a couple of weddings to shoot some video. He is quite talented with his ability to get the shot and his editing skills are Hollywood quality. Can't wait for the whole thing to be finished.

I give this movie two thumbs up!

Jenn and Justin's Engagement Photo Session

We braved the cold and wind this afternoon to shoot Jenn and Justin's Engagement Photos. These guys were great, real troopers. We started off in Girard Park (Where Justin proposed!) and made our way to the downtown area. We did a little walking, mostly driving to avoid the cold wind. We happened upon a little resturaunt along the way. The people were working in the resturaunt getting ready to open. I asked if we could borrow a table and they said for us to make ourselves at home. So, we did. Lighting was great with a slightly overcast sky. I hope Jenn and Justin enjoyed themselves as much as I enjoyed shooting them. Thanks for looking....Chris

Lensbaby Composer Test

I just got the Lensbaby Composer today. Took it out of the box and slapped it on the 5dmkII. It's kinda tricky to use. Kinda like a Tilt-Shift lens but not really. Mine came with the double glass lens. You can get a plastic lens, single glass lens, and a couple more gizmos. All of these shots were done with the f4 apperature. I am going to try it out more on an engagment shoot tomorrow. Don't forget to leave your comments below! Peace out.....Chris
